◊SHRINES◊
what I think about when I am not thinking about art.
I find these so fascinating. Some are memorials, others feature fantastical creatures, and some have religious themes. Each one seems to reflect someone's definition of what is precious. Like the childhood urge to capture bugs in jars, these globes are carefully crafted to preserve something meaningful. It makes you wonder—what would you place in your globe?
It’s fun to skim articles about the ancient use of the spiral. This enduring symbol is still present in art today, where it takes on individual meanings, in contrast to the more collective understanding it likely had in the past. I’ll admit, it’s hard for me to focus on research, especially when, like with spirals, there are no definitive answers regarding their meaning or purpose. I much prefer looking at pictures with a bit of information sprinkled in here and there. I’ve linked some basic articles in case you have one of those brains that can process this (I haven’t even finished reading all of them, lol). :) What fascinates me about ancient spirals is how loaded they feel as an image. It’s both mythical and devastating. A spiral can symbolize the beginning of life, but also its end. We meditate with spirals. We get lost in them. "They can be found everywhere – in the structure of a snail’s shell, a pine cone, or the whorl of our fingerprints; in the shape of the Dean’s Staircase at St. Paul’s Cathedral, or the exterior and interior of the Guggenheim Museum in New York; in the tusk of the narwhal – or, indeed, the unicorn; winding through the heart of our galaxy, and in the double helix of our DNA."
